Description
The Vajra (Tib.: dorje) is the quintessential symbol of the 'Diamond vehicle' or the Tantric Buddhist path.
The vajra as a ritual implement is held in the right hand and symbolises powerful and compassionate method. When used in combination with the bell (Tib.: ghanta) in the left hand, they represent the perfect union of method and wisdom, male and female.
The vajra essentially symbolises the indestructable state of enlightenment or Buddhahood. When used double (crossed), the vajra represents absolute stability.
Translation of the text which is painted underneath the original thangka:
‘The Secret Mind, The Omniscience, the Absolute Awareness of all Buddhas.’
